The scatter plot shows the relationship between the number of car accidents in a month and the number of drivers attending a program on distracted driving. The equation represents the linear model for this data. y=−0.0067x+17 What does the number 17 in the equation mean in this context?

Solution:

Equation of best fit , which describes the relationship between the number of car accidents in a month and the number of drivers attending a program on distracted driving.

The equation is : y= −0.0067 x + 17

Comparing with slope intercept form of line which is , y= m x + c

where m, is the slope of line= -0.0067

Y intercept = 17

If the points are closer to Line of best fit , it means high correlation, and if points are far away from line of best fit it means low correlation between x and y values.

If , X= number of car accidents in a month

Y= number of drivers attending a program on distracted driving.

If, x= 0, y=17, that is,

if number of car accidents=0

Then, number of drivers attending a program on distracted driving= 17

If, Y= number of car accidents in a month

X= number of drivers attending a program on distracted driving.

If, x= 0, y=17,

number of drivers attending a program on distracted driving= 0

Still, number of car accidents in a month=17

The 17 is called a y-intercept so when graphing you would find 17 on the y axis. This is your starting point. Then (in this case) you would go down 0.0067 (down since its negative) because that is the slop. You continue that until you have a line :)

I bolded the answer :)Hope this helps :)
