ESQUILO (525-456 a. C.) nació en Eleusis. Fue soldado y combatió en las batallas de Salamina y Maratón. Autor de varias tetralogías -conjunto de cuatro obras: Layo, Siete sobre Tebas, Edipo y La Esfinge. Entre sus trilogías -conjunto de tres obras-, se halla La Orestiada, constituida por Agamenón, Coéforas y Euménides. Esquilo introdujo al segundo actor y fue el primer autor que puso efectos mecánicos y recursos ornamentales en la escena.
SÓFOCLES (496-406 a. C.) nació en Colono. Director de un cuerpo militar. Se le reconoce como uno de los genios de la literatura universal. Son famosas sus tragedias: Filoctetes, Electra, Las Traquinias, Edipo Rey, Edipo en Colono y Antígona. Las tres últimas forman la trilogía de Edipo.
EURÍPIDES (484-406 a.C.) nació en Salamina. Se conservan sus tragedias: Ifigenia en Aulis, Medea, Las troyanas, Hécuba y El cíclope. Es considerado el más humanista de los dramaturgos griegos.
