For this problem, you are going to be using the equation a^2 + b^2 = c^2 (^2 means squared)

So we are going to find a^2. We already know from the problem that one of the sides is 13^2 and the hypotenuse (longest side of triangle) is 16^2

So our equation so far looks like a^2 + 13^2 = 16^2.
We need to find out next what 13^2 and 16^2 are.

13^2 = 169
16^2 = 256

Next we subtract 256-169 = 87.
Take the SQUARE ROOT of 87
Square root of 87 = 9.3 (rounded

A = 9.3 !

basically
a + 13^2 = 16^2
so
a + 169 = 256

to find what A is, 256 - 169 = a = 87
but, because a is squared, you need the square root of 87 if it is a whole number, but it isn't-
