Photosynthesis is the major source of atmospheric free oxygen which produces sugars and free oxygen from carbon dioxide and water.
Plant life of the land areas as well as the phytoplankton of the oceans are the organisms that photosynthesize releasing oxygen in the atmosphere.
Most oxygen comes from phytoplankton which are tiny ocean plants that live near the water’s surface and drift with the currents. They contribute between 50 to 85 percent of oxygen in the Earths atmosphere.
