What sociological change may have encouraged the innovative developments in italian art of the fourteenth century?

In many of the articles involving the Renaissance of Italy, it is stated that during the 14th century there was a shift or transition between Medieval and Early Modern Europe. During this period, lots of artworks showcased the talents of many great painter and sculptor. There were also lots of music.
