By changing the flow of blood through the skin, the body's temperature can be regulated to some extent. When you are overheated, the more blood flows through the capillaries in the skin, heating it up and allowing for more cooling by the air adjacent to the skin. If you are too cold, the blood flow is shunted away from the skin to the body's core, and this reduces the heat loss to the air from the skin.
