Given the system of equations:

\begin{gathered} y=-2x-7\rightarrow(1) \\ x-y=-8\rightarrow(2) \end{gathered}

we will find the solution to the system by graphing

To draw the lines, we need to know two points on each line

so, substitute with two values of x and calculate the corresponding value of y

For line (1): y = -2x - 7

\begin{gathered} x=0\rightarrow y=-2\cdot0-7=-7 \\ x=1\rightarrow y=-2\cdot1-7=-9 \end{gathered}

so, line (1) passes through the points ( 0, -7) and ( 1, -9)

For line (2): x - y = -8

y = x + 8

\begin{gathered} x=0\rightarrow y=8 \\ x=1\rightarrow y=1+8=9 \end{gathered}

So, line 2 passes through the points ( 0, 8) and ( 1, 9)

The graph of the line will be as shown in the following picture

As shown in the figure:

Line (1) is the blue line

Line (2) is the red line

The point of intersection = ( -5, 3)

So, the solution is point ( -5, 3)

Y= -2x - 7x - y = -8-example-1
