the difference is that theme is the subject of the talk and a persons thought and subject is thing that is being discussed or talked about

A common misconception is that subject and theme are synonyms. They are not.

The subject of a story is the topic of a story. For example, [love, war, family.]

The theme is what the author's message. This is what the author wants you to realize and take into consideration after you've read the book.
