Austria, Finland and Sweden joined what had now become the European Union (EU) in 1995. In 2004, eight former communist countries joined the EU – the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia – along with the Mediterranean island nations of Cyprus and Malta.
