While on vacation, Craig bought a pair of sunglasses for $15.98, a hat for $7.99, 5 postcards, and a beach towel. The beach towel cost $0.50 more than half of the price of the sunglasses. Craig gave the cashier $40.00 and got $3.59 in change. Each postcard cost the same, how much did each postcard cost?

Subtract $15.98, $7.99, $0.50, and 3.59 from $40.00

Answer:

Each postcard cost $0.79

Explanation:

Craig bought various items at a particular price let us represent the items as follows:

pair of sunglasses = $15.98

Hat = $7.99

Let the price of each postcard = a

Total price of 5 postcards =$5a

Beach towel = 0.50 + 1/2 × 15.98 = $8.49

He gave the cashier $40 and got a change of $3.59. That means he paid 40-3.59 = $36.41 for the whole goods he bought.

Total amount of goods bought can be computed as

15.98 + 7.99 + 5a + 8.49 = 36.41

32.46 + 5a = 36.41

5a = 36.41 - 32.46

5a = 3.95

divide both side by 5

a = 3.95/5

a = 0.79

Each postcard cost $0.79
