A string of islands formed by the volcanoes along a deep-ocean trench is called an island arc.

This island arc is a curve shaped chain of volcanic islands which are located at subduction zones and lies with a deep ocean trench. This curve shape can be seen from above. A subduction zone is where one tectonic plate is forced downward under an upper plate.
