elie couldn't have let himself die because he wanted to see the end.and to tell the true story to the holocaust

I think this is during the forced march. Elie couldn't allow himself to die because he could not bear to leave his father alone in this Hell.
I'm pretty sure that's the answer. I read this story myself, and had the same question. This is what I put
