The effect of the tariff of 1828 was that foreign countries purchased less cotton from the South.

For the Souther people of the United States, this Tariff of 1828 was renamed as the Tariff of Abomination because it directly negatively impacted the economy of the South. The Federal government had passed the act in order to protect domestic products but it negatively affected cotton exportation of the southern plantations. The south was not based on industry. It had no fabrics. Its economy was based only in agriculture and depended so much on slavery.
