In "The Rules of the Game," we meet Waverly, a Chinese-American girl who is extremely good at chess. However, she often conflicts with her mother about her method of education. Waverly feels that her mother is constantly criticizing her. Her advice feels less like useful concern and more like passive-aggressive nitpicking. Moreover, when her skills at chess improve, her mother tells everyone that it is just luck. This is the mother's way to push Waverly to be better. However, it only makes the situation worse. Finally, when her mother wants to show her off at the local shops, she snaps and runs away from home.
