how can you tell the difference between a systems word problem that will be in standard form and s systems word problem that requires a literal translation?

The standard form of linear equations is:

Ax + By = C

So if the word problem involves the sum or difference of two unknown quantities and the sum or difference is known, then the equation formed will be in standard form.
