Why is Pickett’s Charge considered a military mistake?

Surrounding the enemy and not attacking leaves the battle indecisive.
Attacking from the flank could be costly.
A direct attack on open ground causes large numbers of casualties.
Holding position does not qualify as a military maneuver.
