How does the process of hearing differ between a person who is awake and a person who is asleep?

a person who is awake will actually hear you and comprehend what is being said other than someone who is asleep will not

When someone is asleep though they can still subconsciously hear you they just don't remember it .. it's not like your ear drums go to sleep they still process noise.. this is how we are able to wake up to an alarm clock
