The British Empire gained a footing in India through the British East India Company. The British East India Company was a company formed in 1600 by merchants to trade between England and the East Indies, however it would also become a source of political influence on India: it had its own army and colonies on the country.

After the British government suppressed the Sepoy Rebellion, India became a direct colony of Britain in 1858. After the Indian Rebellion which started in 1857 against the control of the Company over the country, on June 28 1858 Britain formally established its rule over India.

The Indian National Congress was a prominent political party founded by Indian nationalists. The party was founded in 1885 during the rule of the British Empire over India and it would become the dominant political force after the independence of the country.
