First, distribute the numbers

3(x+1) = -2(x-1) +6
3x+3 = -2x+2+6
3x+3 = -2x+8
Subtract 3 from the left to get rid of it and move it to the right
(3x+3)-3 = (-2x+8)-3
3x= -2x+5
Add 2x from the right to get rid of it and move it to the left.
(3x)+2x = (-2x+5) +2x
5x = 5
Divide both sides by 5
5x/5 = 5/5
x = 1
