At the Hornet's Nest, Grant informed the commanders that they were to hold that position for as long as possible. Why was it so important that they were able to do this?

A.Grant was given time to be able to set up a defensive position in this location.
B.Buell's men could then develop a stronger position on the Union flank.
C.This would give time for General Buell to land his troops at Pittsburg Landing.
D.This gave him time to retreat across the river and escape.

The correct answer is A) Grant was given time to be able to set up a defensive position in this location.

At the Hornet's Nest, Grant informed the commanders that they were to hold that position for as long as possible. It was so important that they were able to do this because Grant was given time to be able to set up a defensive position in this location.

We are referring to the Shiloh battle that started on April 6, 1862, and ended one day after. Hornet's Nest was the nickname of the place of the battle in southwestern Tennesse. More specifically, in Pittsburg Landing in Hardin County, Tennesse. Union's General Ulysses S. Grant defeated Confederate troops led by Albert Sydney Johnston.
