Joey Chestnut is trying to break his own world record for eating the most hot dogs and buns in 101010 minutes. He needs to eat more than 727272 hot dogs to break his record. After 111 minute of competition, Joey has eaten 101010 hot dogs. Joey wants to know the number of hot dogs per minute that he needs to eat for the next 999 minutes to break his own record.

Let ddd represent the number of hot dogs Joey eats per minute. Write an inequality to determine the number of hot dogs per minute Joey must eat for the last 999 minutes to break his record.

Answer: 9d +10 > 72

Explanation:

Correct values (in order) of the question are: 10 minutes,72 hot dogs, 1 minute,10 hot dogs,9 minutes, d ,9.

So, to answer this, first, we have to add the ten hot dogs already eaten in 1 minute and the product of the remaining minutes (9) and the number of hot dogs per minute that he needs to eat in that time (d). That expression must be greater than his previous record (72 hot dogs).

Mathematically speaking

9d +10 > 72

If we solve:

9d >72-10

9d>62

d> 62/9 or 6.7 hot dogs per minute.
