Describe the narrators state of consciousness and how it changes

The man's varying states of consciousness also create suspense. As the man comes to consciousness the first time in the pitch blackness, the suspense is heightened by his wakening consciousness as he wonders whether he can be dead, and then whether he has been buried alive.

well a narrators state of consciousness depends on the topic of the book or the think its reading or saying. It changes constantly because many books and articles and stuff aren't all the same, meaning they have different purpose and meaning.
