Which strategy can be used to solve this problem?

Myrna bought some pens and some binders. Pens cost $2 each and binders cost $3 each. Myrna spent $14 for 6 items.

How many pens did Myrna buy?

A.
Translate into a number sentence.
Let n represent the number of pens Myrna bought.
(2 × n) + (3 × 6) = 14

B.
Make a table.

Myrna's Purchases
Number 1 2 3 4 5 6
Pens $2 $4 $6 $8 $10 $12
Binders $3 $6 $9 $12 $15 $18

C.
Guess and test.
Guess that Myrna bought 3 pens and 3 binders. Figure out what she would have spent on the 6 items. If this doesn't equal $14, try 2 pens and 4 binders. Figure out what she would have spent. Is this more or less than $14? Revise your guess, and test your answer again.
