There is actually two anatomical sections which would provide a view of the internal anatomy of both kidneys, they are; frontal (coronal) and transverse (horizontal). A frontal section through the kidney reveals an outer region called the renal cortex and an inner region called the medulla. The transverse plane is the plane that divides the body or organ horizontally into upper and lower portions. Transverse planes produce images referred to as cross sections.
