Lithium, a group 1 element with an electron configuration of 1s22s1, will form a cation ion a chemical reaction. It is so, because as mentioned before it is part of group 1 elements and these tend to lose electrons from other element they react with. In this way, as they lose electrons, the final charge of the ion is possitive.

Being part of the 1A group, in a chemical reaction, Lithium will produce an ion with a charge of +1. This type of ions are called cations because of the positive charge. In this sense, during chemical reaction, lithium will release one of its ions.
