Answer: He cut 38 roses

Explanation:

Hi, to answer this question we have to write an equation:

x will be the number of roses that he cut.

He gave 10 to his neighbor: x-10

And gave half of what was left to his niece: (x-10)/2

He kept the remaining 14 roses: (x-10)/2=14

(x-10)/2=14

solving for x

x-10 =14(2)

x-10 = 28

x =28+10

x =38

Feel free to ask for more if needed or if you did not understand something.

To answer the question above, we let x be the number of the roses Charles did cut from the garden. After giving out 10 roses, he only had x - 10 roses left. Giving away half of what was left will leave him with 14 roses after. The equation that best represent the given is,
14 = x - 10 - (x - 10)/2
The value of x from the equation is 38.
