x² and y² are areas

x is 5 more than y
x=5+y

and
larger is 95 more than smaller
x²=95+y²

expand/FOIL/distribute
y²+10y+25=95+y²
minus y² from both sides
10y+25=95
minus 25 from both sides
10y=70
divide both sides by 10
y=7

sub back
x=5+y
x=5+7
x=12
