When is a molecular compound named as an acid?

When the compound produces hydrogen atoms, (H+) in the solution, it is called an acid. It is a molecule or ion capable of donating a hydron or, alternatively, capable of forming a covalent bond with an electron pair (a Lewis acid). Hope this answers the question.
