A cylinder and a cone have the same diameter: 8 inches. The height of the cylinder is 9 inches. The height of the cone is 18 inches.

Use π = 3.14.

What is the relationship between the volume of this cylinder and this cone? Explain your answer by determining the volume of each and comparing them. Show all your work.

Answer:

The cylinder:

We have to find the radius first. r=8/2 = 4

The equation is: V= π r^2 h

V= (3.14) (4)^2 (9)

V= 452.16

Cylinder: 452.16 in.

The cone:

We have to find the radius again: r=8/2 = 4

The equation: V= 1/3 π r^2 h

V= 1/3 (3.14) (4)^2 (18)

V= 1/3 (904.32)

V= 904.32/3 = 301.44

V= 301.44

Cone: 301.44 in.

Volume of the cylinder is 1.5 times of the volume of the cone because 301.44 x 1.5 = 452.16

Volume of cone x 1.5 = volume of cylinder.
