The letters represent the genes that are donated by each parent during fertilization. The square shows you all the possible outcomes by combining two pairs of genoptypes

while the letters on the outside of a Punnett Square stand for the parent alleles. theletters stand for the specific trait . Either one dominant and one recessive or both dominant or both recessive.
