A company has been forced to reduce its number of employees. Today the company has 33% fewer employees than it did a year ago. If there are currently 268 employees, how many employees did the company have a year ago?

Solution :

The number of employees currently in a company = 268

Percentage of employees less than a year ago = 33%

Let he number of people a year ago = x

∴ At present the number of employees =
$x - x * (33)/(100)$

⇒ 268 = x (1 - 0.33)

⇒ 268 = 1x -0.33 x

⇒ 268 = 0.67 x

⇒ x = 400

Number of employees in a year is = 400
