Final answer:

To find out how much space is available on either side of the couch, subtract the length of the couch from the length of the room. The length of the room is 20 feet and the length of the couch is 12 1/3 feet. Therefore, you can place a table of up to 7.67 feet on either side of the couch.

Step-by-step explanation:

To find out how much space is available on either side of the couch, we need to subtract the length of the couch from the length of the room. The length of the room is given as 20 feet and the length of the couch is 12 1/3 feet. To subtract these lengths, we need to convert the fractional length of the couch into a mixed number or a decimal.

12 1/3 feet can be written as 12 + 1/3 feet, which is equal to 12 + 0.33 feet = 12.33 feet. Now, we can subtract 12.33 feet from 20 feet: 20 feet - 12.33 feet = 7.67 feet.

Therefore, you can place a table of up to 7.67 feet on either side of the couch.

20-12 1/3=7 2/3 or 23/3.   so there is a total of 23/3 ft available.  We then take half of that for each side.  1/2 of 23/3= 1/2*23/3= 23/6
