The trade routes were so important because people transported goods. The Ottoman Empire could then heavily tax and merchants for those goods, which gave great wealth to the empire. It also prevented European trade, which led to more discoveries on their part.

The takeover was important because the Arab presence in the region prevented the European trade, which was developing strongly, to continue its expansion. Thus, it forced the Europeans to look for new routes, which caused the great period of discoveries, causing the colonization of the Americas.
