The Directory's ruling was extremely weak. Economy was in severe decline, leading to a massive increase in poverty and crime terrifying the population.

Another serious issue was the evident corruption from the government. A good example to illustrate the magnitude of this problem was the case of Chevalier enterprise agreeing on a contract to build large warships and fragrates, receiveing funds by The Directory that were seized from aristocrats and the Church. However, none of it was constructed and not even the materials were purchased.

Eventually Napoleon Bonaparte overthrew The Directory with his military power and supported by the people.
