It is often the largest organelle in the cell and is surrounded by a membrane. It functions to hold materials and wastes. It also functions to maintain the proper structure within the plant cells to provide structure and support for the growing plant.

Vacuole is needed in plant cells to store water, food and nutrients. It also does the job of getting rid of waste in the cell. Another function of vacuole is to provide structural support and protection of the plant cell.
