one atom of sodium and one atom of chlorine is needed to produce sodium chloride NaCl
Na+ + Cl- ----------> NaCl
both the atoms combine in 1:1 ratio to form NaCl
this compound is an ionic compound.

Sodium chloride is made from one sodium atom and one chlorine atom:
Sodium has a charge of +1, or just +.
Chlorine has a charge of -1, or just -.
These balance out.
