-23 + (-14) = -37
Remove the parentheses and subtract the numbers. Since both the numbers are negative, you are actually adding them.

-23 + (-14)
Adding a negative number is just like subtracting the number: + (-14) = -14
so -23 + (-14) = -23-14
It's just like adding, but you add the (-) sign:
-23-14 = -37
