What was the importance of the transcontinental railroad

The transcontinental railroad served for the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the united states. that is all i pretty much know about that but still  hope that was enough!

The transcontinental railroad helped connect the east and west side of the U.S. It also made it easier to move westward.
