(driving to the lake) 216 divided by 48 = 4.5
(driving from the lake) 216 divided by 54 = 4

4.5+4=8.5

They drove a total of 8.5 hours to and from the lake.

Answer:

Option B is correct.

Total time that Antony's family spent driving to and from the lake = 8.5 hr

Explanation:

Using time formula:

Time = (Distance)/(Speed)

As per the given statement: Anton's family drove 216 mi to the lake averaging 48 mi/hr .On the return trip home they averaged 54 mi/hr

⇒ Anton's family drove total distance = 216 mi

Speed of Antony's family driving to lake = 48 mi/hr

Time taken to driving to lake =
(216)/(48) = 4.5 hr

Now,

Speed of Antony's family driving from lake = 54 mi/hr

Time taken to driving from lake =
(216)/(54) = 4 hr

Total time spent driving to and from the lake = 4 + 4.5 = 8.5 hr.

therefore, the total time that Antony's family spent driving to and from the lake was, 8.5 hr
