Increased public political awareness could be considered a long-term benefit of the Seventeeth Amendment.
The Seventeeth Amendment allowed the people to vote directly for U.S. Senators. Before it was passed, senators were chosen by state legislatures. Because people are allowed to vote for their senator, they have to be more up to date about politics and what is happening.
