1) Define the three trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, and tangent) using opposite side, adjacent side, and hypotenuse)​

Answers:

  • sin(angle) = opposite/hypotenuse
  • cos(angle) = adjacent/hypotenuse
  • tan(angle) = opposite/adjacent

These three ratios are often expected to be memorized or written on a flashcard, or reference sheet. I recommend memorizing them as they will come up quite often in trigonometry.

One way to remember is to use phrase "SOH CAH TOA" which could sound like "soak a toe-a" when you pronounce it out.

SOH = sine opposite hypotenuse

CAH = cosine adjacent hypotenuse

TOA = tangent opposite adjacent
