Solving for x...

(1)/(2) x+ (1)/(4) = (15)/(16)

Times the
(1)/(2) , both the numerator and denominator, by 8 to get the denominator to 16.
Times the
(1)/(4) , both the numerator and denominator, by 4 to get the denominator to 16.

Then rewrite the problem,

(8)/(16)x+ (4)/(16) = (15)/(16)

now that the denominators are all the same, you can solve...
subtract the
(4)/(16) from both sides

you should get
(8)/(16) x = (11)/(16)

Multiply both sides by 16 (it'll cancel both the 16 out making it go away)
8x = 11

divide each side by 8 to have the x alone

8x = 11
8 8

You should end with x =
(11)/(8) or 1.375
