9 cookies is 1/4 of the remaining cookies, therefore you can multiply by 4 to have 36 cookies, they gave away 1/3 before this, so you then multiply by 3/2 for 54 cookies

1/3 given away
2/3 left
1/4 of lelft (2/3) eaaten
1/4 times 2/3=2/12=1/6 eaten by them
if 9=eaten by them
9=1/6 of total
times 6/1 both sides
54=total
they made 54 cookies
