How would you explain the definition of “cognates” when talking about language.

A) Cognates are vocabulary words that are opposites.

B) Cognates are other words for verb conjugations.
C) Cognates are words that share the same background and are similar in spelling.

I would choose C) Cognates are words that share the same background and are similar in spelling.

This is because I've learned in my Spanish class that a cognate is a word in a language (i.e. spanish) looking similar and having the same meaning of a word in another language (i.e. English)
