He had a "theory of mind". This is pretty much what we know today: how when babies are born, they have an open/blank mind, and that knowledge is only received by experience and sense perception. Later he also said, "whatever I write, as soon as I discover it not to be true, my hand shall be the forwardest to throw it into the fire".
