An ecosystem consists of many different families. If there was a lack of diversity within the ecosystem then the entire system could collapse. For example, if there are too many foxes in an ecosystem then there will be a shortage of bunnies, their main prey. Without the bunnies not only do the foxes starve but the bunnies' food group grows too large to maintain. Hope this helps a little.
