Let the cost of jacket before sales tax be z.

sales tax = $2.38

When the sales tax was included the jacket = $37

Cost of Jacket + Sales tax = 37

z + 2.38 = 37 Equation

z = 37 - 2.38

z = 34.62

Hence cost of jacket = $34.62

Hope this explains it.
