Answer:

- in order to balance the chemical equation, you need to make sure the number of atoms of each element on the reactant side is equal to the number of atoms of each element on the product side.

equation: (given)

__ C + __ H2 --> __ CH4

C = 1 | C = 1

H = 2 | H = 4

so, here we can see that the number of hydrogen (H) atoms are NOT equal, which means we have to put a number infront of the compounds inorder to balance it. this means putting a coefficient.

equation: (balanced)

C + 2H2 + CH4

- the only thing added was the 2.
