Heather is filling her new Koi pond with a water hose. After 33 minutes, her pond has 74 gallons water. Her Koi pond holds 480 gallons of water. She adds another water hose that flows twice as fast. Find the constant of proportionality for the flow rate of the two water hoses combined? (round to nearest tenth)

Answer:

6.7

Explanation:

First hose flows 74 gallons in 33 minutes.

Second hose flows twice as fast, so 148 gallons per 33 minutes.

If x is directly proportional to y, then y = kx.

k = y /x = 74 + 148 /33 = 222 /33 = 6.7

Initial flow rate: 74 gallons/33 minutes = 2.24 gallons/minute

Additional flow rate: 2*74/33 = 4/48 gallons/minute

Total new rate: 3*74/33 = 6.72 gallons/minute

the answer is 6.7
