the middle passage was hard and very dangerous for slaves, they would be locked under deck with hundreds of other slaves in such a small area, all of them would share the same food and they wouldn’t even be allowed to go to the toilet, it was the most unsanitary place to be and many died of disease and illness due to the amount of bacteria caused by defecation, vomit, urine and sharing food between everyone from the same bucket

Military strength and control of the trade were intertwined. At this time governments restricted which ships could trade with their colonies. Each European power restricted trade within their colony to benefit their own merchants. Conquest of colonies in the Americas led to an increased share of slave trading.
